In 1971 Neruda won the Nobel Prize for Literature, a controversial award because of his political activism. Neruda was accomplished in a variety of styles, ranging from erotically charged love poems like his collection Twenty Poems of Love and a Song of Despair, surrealist poems, historical epics, and overtly political manifestos. With his works translated into many languages, Pablo Neruda is considered one of the greatest and most influential poets of the 20th century. Neruda's pen name was derived from Czech writer and poet Jan Neruda Pablo is thought to be from Paul Verlaine. ![]() Neruda assumed his pen name as a teenager, partly because it was in vogue, partly to hide his poetry from his father, a rigid man who wanted his son to have a "practical" occupation. Pablo Neruda was the pen name and, later, legal name of the Chilean writer and politician Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. ![]()

Just like individual memory, collective memory cannot be created over a short time. The Hirak has created and consolidated a freedom of speech, but it is also likely that the Hirak was born out of the need for free speech. Would such freedom of speech have been possible without the Hirak? Hundreds of messages brought back memories of the “Black Decade”. What’s really cool is that Aunt Kitty is based on the real life Pickerton agent: Kate Warne. I had not read much about them before this book. WHAT’S COOL…ġ) I love the historical connection to the Pickerton Detective Agency. And the only person who can help reveal the truth had to escape on the Underground Railroad to Canada. As well, she plans to prove that the fatal shot to her Uncle Matthew (fired by her now-dead father) was an accident. So now it’s up to Nell to show how useful she can be to her aunt. Reason #2: Nell’s father killed Aunt Kitty’s husband. Reason #1: She’s busy enough as it is as the only female detective of the famed Pickerton Agency. She still gets a pass for tuning out the world and retreating into herself. Teachers and classmates still look at her with pity. Ollie hasn't been the same since her mother died. I had no clue what SMALL SPACES was about when I first heard of it - or even that Arden had written a middle-grade novel! - but I instantly knew I wanted it. Initially, I knew about Arden because she wrote the popular adult fantasy Winternight trilogy, which begins with the much-acclaimed THE BEAR AND THE NIGHTINGALE. Today, I'd like to introduce you to the new kid on the block, SMALL SPACES by Katherine Arden. ![]() Another book in the genre I really love is DOLL BONES by Holly Black, which is a Newbery Honor title. ![]() Then, of course, you have well-established titles such as CORALINE by Neil Gaiman and entire catalogs from authors such as Mary Downing Hahn and R.L. Kozlowsky, which is no longer well-known. One of my favorites to recommend is JUNIPER BERRY by M.P. It is so hard to find a middle-grade book that is just the right amount of spine-tingling. ![]() |
