5/28/2023 0 Comments The woman in the window novel![]() ![]() Her new neighbour and her latest friend, Jane Russell, is stabbed in her chest. ![]() It goes like that, lazy and mundane, until one day she witnesses something she shouldn’t have. She spends most of her days watching old black and white suspense thrillers and American noir films, counselling people on the Agora website, playing chess, drinking, and watching her neighbours through her camera from her window. As the story proceeds, we learn that Anna Fox is a child psychologist, hit by a posttraumatic stress disorder, and is now scared to leave her house- an acute case of agoraphobia. A little while later she sets up for her nightly film - Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much. The story begins with Anna’s monologue as she looks at house number 212 from the windows through her Nikon D5500. I zoom in on her face, the eyes sprung wide. She folds her arms around his back, kisses him deep. ![]() She unlooses her ponytail, hair swinging onto her shoulders. ![]() I face the window again, Nikon at my eye. “Cross your fingers,” I say along with her. “Hold your breath.” I turn to the television. Along with mystery lovers, this book ignites the liking of every film buff with continuous references to American Noir films with their dialogues playing as the narration. Finn's debut novel has become a New York bestseller in the first week of its publication. ![]()

5/27/2023 0 Comments Book of night holly black review![]() ![]() Her first foray into writing for adults is simultaneously definitely more grown up, but also 100% the same feel. None of them were groundbreaking books, but they were fun, pacy page-turners with sympathetic (if not always likeable) main characters and interesting, immersive worlds. It’s not a desperately original formula, but it’s one that absolutely worked on me in my teens and kept me coming back for more. They also often meet men on the way who are tied into those magical worlds, and go past initial dislike or apathy to find that they’d do absolutely anything – even dangerous, disastrous, extremely inadvisable things – to keep hold of them. ![]() She tends to have slightly feisty female protagonists who come from less-than-ideal circumstances, and succeed in magical or strange situations using their wits and grit to overcome people with more power than them. I read a lot of Holly Black YA when I was growing up, and she has a Vibe. ![]() 5/27/2023 0 Comments The folk of the air books![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Her black eyes meet mine in the claw-footed mirror on my dressing table. ![]() The imp’s fingers are long, her nails sharp. This question ’tis impossible to answer without a manifest contradiction and absurdity and yet ’tis a question, which must necessarily be answer’d, if we wou’d have the idea of self pass for clear and intelligible. Unluckily all these positive assertions are contrary to that very experience, which is pleaded for them, nor have we any idea of self, after the manner it is here explain’d. To attempt a farther proof of this were to weaken its evidence since no proof can be deriv’d from any fact, of which we are so intimately conscious nor is there any thing, of which we can be certain, if we doubt of this.Ģ.
